Zinc oxide is used for more or less everything. This is because of its chemical and physical properties. Zinc oxide is derived from mainly two methods, that is, chemical and metallurgical. It has great chemical stability. It is highly coefficient and is able to create electrochemical coupling. It has a great usage in material science and is known for is semiconducting property.
The importance ZnO additives for rubber
Activation of the curing system – The ZnO additives for rubber along with stearic acid is mixed together to form a product known as zinc soap. This newly formed material improves the solubility of zinc oxide and acts as an accelerator to form a complex. The complex is livelier. It forms a great vulcanizing agent after reacting with sulfur.
Improvising the density of cross-linking – Zinc oxide and stearic acid is mixed to form a salt, which is induced with sulfur which contains accelerator of rubber. This helps the weak bonds to become strong. It also changes the position of cracking of sulfur. This further helps the rubber to vulcanize and this leads to form short cross-links.
Enhances the anti-aging property – The vulcanization of rubber breaks the bond of polysulfide. This results in the cracking of the rubber. The ZnO additive for rubber reacts which forms the bond of cross-linking. This entire process helps to improve the resistibility of aging.
Therefore, it can be said that zinc oxide has three main roles to play. These are activating or accelerating, to vulcanize the rubber and improvise the density of its cross-linking and to improvise the property of anti-aging of rubber.
Other uses of Zinc oxide
ZnO is not only used as an additive for rubber. There are certainly other uses of zinc oxide which are beneficial. The following are some of the many uses of zinc oxide: -
1.It is used as a colorant and an agent for bulking.
2.Zinc oxide is beneficial for skin as it acts as a sunscreen. Therefore, it is used in medical products to protect skin from the harmful sun rays.
3.It helps in resisting the skin from prematurity.
4.The powder form of zinc oxide is used in making makeup and powders made for the foot.
5.The zinc oxide is also used in baby products that reduce the rash formed on the baby skin due to the regular use of the diaper.
6.It is also used in soaps and nail products.
